Anacua
Ehretia anacua
South Texas native semi-deciduous tree; evergreen south of San Antonio. It is also called the Sandpaper tree due to the rough texture of its leaves.
Ideal for alkaline soils with good drainage, but can adapt to acidic soils. Desired for its showy and fragrant star shaped flowers that appear in mass in spring through summer. It develops attractive orange fruits thereafter. Attracts wildlife very well, making it ideal for any South Texas landscape.
The tree itself often has several wide spreading trunks, growing into a natural gnarled shape.
