A durable landscape shrub that makes an attractive deciduous hedge or specimen bloomer. It’s prized for its outstanding blooms on display from summer to fall. Popular in small landscapes as well as urban landscapes due to its high tolerance to air pollution.
Blooms start to appear in early summer, with several buds on the tips of new branch growth. Flowers themselves will only last a single day, however they are quickly replaced as the days go on. Soil moisture is important to ensure constant blooming, so mulch Althea and provide regular watering. Several cultivars are available in different colors, and providing single or double blooms. 'Aphrodite' has dark pink single flowers with a dark red center. Plant in full sun for best flower show.
Leaves are coarsely tooth and slightly tri-lobed, emerging late in the spring. Branches have a natural erect habit, forming a vase shape. Best pruned in the late winter to ensure uniformed flower distribution.
