Purslane

Portulaca oleracea

Portulaca oleracea, commonly known as Purslane, is a succulent plant species widely distributed across the globe, particularly in temperate and tropical regions. Belonging to the Portulacaceae family, this herbaceous plant is notable for its thick, fleshy leaves and small but showy flowers. Purslane has a long history of culinary and medicinal use dating back centuries, with its edible leaves and stems being rich in essential nutrients such as vitamins A, C, and E, as well as omega-3 fatty acids. Its high nutritional value has led to its inclusion in various cuisines worldwide, where it is utilized fresh in salads, soups, and stir-fries, or cooked as a vegetable.

Despite its nutritional and medicinal benefits, Portulaca oleracea is considered a weed in many regions due to its prolific growth and ability to thrive in diverse environmental conditions. However, its resilience and adaptability have also made it a valuable component of sustainable horticultural practices, particularly in arid and marginal lands where it can serve as a drought-resistant food source and ground cover. Although considered a weed, it will die in a freeze anywhere in Texas, making it an annual unless grown in containers and brought inside.

The flowers can range from many colors, available in single or double blooms. The blooms will only open during the day, then close in the evening.
