About Us

Mortellaro's Nursery was established in 1956 by Joe and Lucille Mortellaro. It began as a backyard nursery on the southside of San Antonio, an extension of the produce business that Joe Mortellaro began as a young man. As the changing times closed the door on the home delivery business of Joe's Vegetables, gears were shifted and Joe Mortellaro's Nursery was born. In 1957, we moved to the old sales location in San Antonio on Loop 410, where our corporate office and sales yard were located till the end of 2001.

In 1964 James Harden joined the firm and in 1967 Joanne Mortellaro Harden took over the bookkeeping responsibilities of Lucille Mortellaro. The nursery was incorporated in 1970. On August 5, 1973, Joe Mortellaro passed away and James Harden took over management of the nursery and currently serving as CEO and President. Floyd McKenzie came to work for us in 1971. James Harden, Jr. graduated from Texas A&M in 1991 and joined the firm. Joe Harden started after graduation from Texas Tech in 1997. In the early 1970's, 140 acres was purchased in Atascosa County, just outside of Poteet, for field grown operation. Today we have 40 acres of land under cultivation growing specimen plants which we dig, containerize, and transfer to the Schertz Location until they are ready to sell. In 1975 we began purchasing land on Interstate 35, northeast of San Antonio in Schertz, Guadalupe County. We have 70 acres of land with 50 acres in production with more acreage being added to production every year. Originally this facility was growing and shipping only, but in 2001 we began construction of our corporate and sales office in Schertz. By the end of the year we finally had our sales, shipping, and corporate offices under one roof. Large display gardens surround the office with a sample of all our available plant material.

In 2004, we moved the last greenhouse from Loop 410 and moved the old sales office and accounting office to poteet where we have increased production to compensate for the production area lost in San Antonio. We even moved the home of Joe and Lucille Mortellaro (which was the original office) to Poteet. Closing those gates for the last time was a time of sadness for all of us, and we've salvaged all we can in bringing our memories with us. Mortellaro's carries a wide variety of shrubs, trees, ground covers, native plants, and seasonal color for landscape use. We have always encouraged and welcomed the elgible walk-in customer who wants to place an order and drive off with the plant material needed. We sell throughout the state of Texas and deliveries are made in our own trucks. Our Sales yard is located at 16946 I.H. 35 North, Schertz Texas. We are open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm. We are open half a day Saturdays, 8 till noon. We welcome elgible walk in customers, but you can call us to place an order for pickup or delivery. Please note our conditions for sales in our Ordering section.
