Glossy Abelia is a hybrid between Abelia chinensis and Abelia uniforla, both natives to China. It is a fast grower with graceful arching branches that develop a loose round mounding shrub. Some rouge branches can reach up to 10 feet in length, but Glossy Abelia seems to average itself at 6 feet tall and wide.
Regular pruning is appreciated and transforms Abelia into an attractive flowering hedge. White blooms with a hint of pink appear only on new growth in the spring and persist into fall. Planting in full sun provides the best display of blooms, however will still provide some color if grown in filtered shade. Butterflies are easily attracted to the blooms.
Glossy Abelia has very few pest problems and maintenance free if you are not particular about using it as a thick hedge. Fertilizer is best applied in late winter.
