Southern African native agapanthus are popular landscape additions due to their outstanding floral display. Perennials with strap-like leaves are available in several sizes; the tubular flowers form in a sphere at the end of a slender stalk, and are available in a variety of blue hues. Blooms appear primarly in the late spring, and intermittedly throughout the summer. Agapanthus is evergreen in warmer climates, and somewhat drought tolerant once established.
The thick roots and rhizomes often push the plant up out of the soil, hidden by the firm strap leaves that form a large mound.
The Elaine Agapanthus is an Archie Armate introduction with dark violet-blue flowers.
