Agave sp. 'Azul Monterrey', or Monterrey Blue Agave, is a spectacular and rare find from the karst limestone mountains outside of Monterrey, Mexico, where it grows naturally in the understory of high-elevation pine-oak forests. It is considered a naturally occurring hybrid swarm between Agave ovatifolia, Agave asperrima, and Agave montana, and agave experts have noted it may represent a species new to science, making it one of the most botanically intriguing agaves in cultivation today.

This stunning plant forms a large, dense rosette of broad, pale blue, nearly white leaves with an outstandingly neat, clean appearance. The broad, ovate, fleshy leaves are tipped with bold black terminal spines, giving the overall plant a striking, rounded silhouette. At maturity it typically reaches 3 to 5 feet tall with a spread of 4 to 6 feet, though its slow growth means plants may take 5 to 10 years to reach their full, imposing size.

Hardy to USDA Zone 7b, 'Azul Monterrey' thrives in full sun and is both drought tolerant and deer resistant. It is very sensitive to wet soils, so excellent drainage is essential — a sandy mix with added perlite works best. Once established, it requires only infrequent watering during the hot season and adapts beautifully to landscapes, rock gardens, and containers alike. For collectors and gardeners in search of something genuinely rare, this cold-hardy, architecturally bold agave is an exceptional addition to any dry garden planting.
