View Current CropParry's Agave is a striking, slow-growing succulent prized for its perfectly symmetrical rosettes of broad, powdery blue-gray leaves. Native to the mountains and high desert regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, it brings year-round architectural beauty to water-wise landscapes. Its compact form makes it an excellent choice for rock gardens, xeriscapes, containers, and modern landscape designs where bold texture and color are desired.
This exceptionally drought-tolerant agave thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, including sandy, rocky, and limestone-based soils common throughout much of Texas. It performs best in areas with excellent drainage and should not be planted where water stands after heavy rains. Once established, Parry's Agave requires very little supplemental irrigation and is highly resistant to heat, making it a dependable choice for low-maintenance landscapes. In Central Texas, it generally benefits from avoiding poorly drained clay soils unless they are amended or planted on berms or raised beds.
Parry's Agave is also remarkably cold hardy for an agave, tolerating temperatures well below freezing and thriving in USDA Zones 5-9. Mature plants typically reach 2-3 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide, eventually producing offsets that slowly form attractive colonies. After many years, a mature rosette sends up a spectacular flower stalk that can reach 10-15 feet tall, covered with clusters of yellow flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. Like all agaves, the flowering rosette dies after blooming, but surrounding offsets usually continue the colony.
Whether used as a dramatic focal point, massed in a xeriscape, or paired with ornamental grasses, yuccas, and native perennials, Parry's Agave offers outstanding durability and timeless beauty. Deer and rabbits generally avoid it due to its rigid, spine-tipped leaves, making it an excellent choice for landscapes where browsing wildlife is a concern. Its exceptional combination of drought tolerance, cold hardiness, and sculptural form has made it one of the finest agaves for landscapes across much of Texas.
