Parthenocissus quinquefolia
Virginia Creeper
- Climbing Vine
- Category: Vines and Groundcovers, Discontinued
- Hardiness Zone: 3a
- Height: 12 Inches
- Spread: 60 Feet
- Bloom Color: Yellow
Trees, shrubs, fences, and even walls are easily covered with Virginia Creeper, with branches reaching up to 60 feet. If you wish to remove it from walls without damage, simply kill the main branch at the base and allow it to die and fall on its own. Prefers partly sunny locations with well drained soils, but will tolerate full sun with regular watering.
The five-leaflet compound leaves grow up to six inches across, and are dark green on top, light green underneath. In the fall the leaves turn shades ranging from dark burgundy to scarlet red.
Yellow-green flowers start to appear in the late spring, staying for only a few weeks before turning to small orange-red fruits enjoyed by birds.
