This Texas native tree should not be a stranger to anyone who drives into the countryside or likes to BBQ in their backyard. Small to medium in size, the Mesquite tree is a tough and durable tree that would be difficult to lose to the elements or neglect.

Growing up to 40 feet in height and width, Mesquite has an irregular branching habit, the occasional spines,  and grows outward and with a slight droop. Delicate leaves adorn the branches and allow plants to grown underneath easily. Pale yellow flower spikes appear in the spring to early summer. Green-yellow seedpods form in the summer, dry in the fall, and are a food source for a wide variety of wildlife.  Difficult to remove from the landscape due to it’s ability to Coppice – pruning down to the stump will result in multiple new trunks.

One old-wives tale that surrounds the Texas Mesquite is that once leaves emerge, the cold winter is over.
