Bignonia capreolata (Crossvine)

Crossvine

Bignonia capreolata 'Tangerine Beauty'

‘Tangerine Beauty’ Crossvine is a vigorous, semi-evergreen to evergreen flowering vine prized for its brilliant orange to tangerine trumpet-shaped blooms that appear from late winter into spring, often as early as February in Central Texas. This selection of the native Crossvine is especially valued for its heavier bloom set and more intense flower color compared to the species. The glossy green foliage may take on purple-bronze tones in winter, particularly after light freezes. In most of Texas, it performs reliably in Zones 6–9 and rebounds well even after cold snaps.

In the Texas landscape, Tangerine Beauty Crossvine is an excellent choice for covering fences, arbors, pergolas, and masonry walls. It climbs by tendrils with adhesive disks, allowing it to cling to brick or stone without the need for wires. It thrives in full sun to part shade; however, best flowering occurs in full sun, especially with good afternoon light. It tolerates a wide range of soils, including alkaline conditions common in Central and North Texas, and once established is notably drought tolerant. While adaptable, it benefits from decent drainage and moderate irrigation during establishment. Deer typically show little interest once vines are established, making it a useful option in high-pressure areas.

This vine can reach 20–30 feet long with a spread of 6–9 feet depending on support and pruning. It responds well to shaping after bloom and can be maintained as a dense screening vine or allowed to naturalize for a looser, cottage-style look. Flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds and early pollinators, providing important seasonal nectar when few other plants are in bloom.
