Hens and Chicks
Sempervivum tectorum
Discontinued
A small matt-forming succulent plant that self propigates easily through small rosettes branching out (the 'chicks') from the main plant (the 'Hen'). Small flowers that can be pink to white appear on the mature plants, after which the plant dies and the 'chicks' become the new 'Hens'.
Although Hens and Chicks tolerates drought and dryness very well, it requires well-drained soil. No real insect or disease problems inherit with this plant make it a popular addition to any xeriscape design.
