Angelonia (Angelonia angustifolia), also known as Summer Snapdragon, is a heat-loving, upright annual or tender perennial grown for its spikes of snapdragon-like blooms that appear from late spring through fall. Flowers come in shades of purple, pink, white, and blue, often with bicolor patterns, and attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Angelonia adds vertical interest to beds, borders, and containers and thrives in the hot, dry summers of Central and South Texas.

Angelonia thrives in full sun and needs well-drained soil to perform well. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH, but tolerates alkaline conditions with good drainage. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant, but benefits from regular watering to maintain continuous blooms. It is deer-resistant, low-maintenance, and does not require deadheading to stay attractive. Most varieties reach 12 to 18 inches tall and 10 to 14 inches wide, with newer dwarf selections staying more compact. Space plants 10 to 12 inches apart in landscape beds.

In USDA Zones 9–11, Angelonia may overwinter in protected microclimates, but it is most commonly grown as a warm-season annual in Central Texas. It may survive mild winters but typically declines with frost and is replanted each spring. Angelonia performs especially well in containers, raised beds, or mass plantings, where its upright form contrasts nicely with trailing or mounding companions.
