Ixora coccinea (Ixora)

Ixora

Ixora coccinea

Ixora coccinea is a tropical evergreen shrub prized for its dense foliage and showy clusters of flowers in shades of red, orange, yellow, and pink – although we only stock the red bloomer. Native to tropical Asia, ixora is widely used in warm-climate landscapes but is not cold hardy enough for year-round outdoor planting in Central Texas. When grown here, it should be treated strictly as a container plant, allowing it to be protected from cold temperatures.

In Central Texas, ixora must be grown in containers that can be moved indoors during fall and winter. Outdoors, it performs best in bright morning sun with protection from intense afternoon heat, especially during peak summer months. Containers are ideal for patios, courtyards, and entryways where plants can be showcased during warm weather and relocated as needed. Mature container-grown plants typically reach 3–5 feet tall and wide, depending on pot size and pruning. Regular light pruning helps maintain a compact, well-branched form.

Ixora requires acidic, well-drained soil to thrive, which is a critical consideration in Texas where alkaline soils and irrigation water are common. A high-quality potting mix formulated for acid-loving plants is strongly recommended, and poor drainage should be avoided. Consistent moisture is important, but containers should never remain waterlogged. Ixora is moderately drought sensitive and will drop leaves or fail to bloom if stressed. It is not deer tolerant and is considered non-toxic.

Cold sensitivity is the primary limitation for ixora in Central Texas. Temperatures below 40°F can cause damage, and frost or freezes will severely injure or kill the plant. Containers should be brought indoors before cold fronts, ideally placed in a bright location with indirect light. During winter, reduce watering and avoid fertilization until active growth resumes in spring. With proper seasonal care and strict container management, ixora can be successfully grown as a specialty tropical accent in Central Texas landscapes.
