Honeysuckle, Halls
Lonicera japonica 'Halliana'
Hall’s Honeysuckle is a vigorous, semi-evergreen to evergreen twining vine that has long been grown in Texas landscapes for its intensely fragrant blooms and fast coverage. Though not native to Texas, it has adapted extremely well to our climate and is hardy in Zones 4–9, easily handling Central Texas heat and typical winter conditions. In mild winters it may remain mostly evergreen, while colder areas may see partial leaf drop. Because of its aggressive growth habit and ability to spread, it should be planted thoughtfully and maintained regularly.
In the Texas landscape, Hall’s Honeysuckle is most commonly used on fences, arbors, and trellises where rapid coverage is desired. It can reach 15–25 feet long with support and spreads 5–10 feet wide. Space plants 4–6 feet apart along a fence line for solid coverage within a growing season or two. It performs best in full sun to part shade; in Central Texas, morning sun with afternoon protection helps maintain foliage quality. It tolerates a wide range of soils, including alkaline soils common in our region, and is adaptable to average drainage but does not prefer consistently soggy conditions.
Fragrant tubular flowers open white and mature to buttery yellow from spring through early summer, often with sporadic rebloom into fall. The blooms are highly attractive to hummingbirds and pollinators. Small black berries may follow flowering. Berries are considered mildly toxic if ingested in quantity, though they are primarily consumed by birds. Deer tend to browse new growth occasionally but it is generally considered moderately deer tolerant once established. Regular pruning after flowering helps control size and encourages fresh growth.
