The Chinese Fringe Flower is a popular shrub with rich burgundy leaves, and delicate ribbon-petaled fuchsia flowers that appear heavily in the spring, then sporadically through summer. Long arching branches shoot out from younger plants, giving a very open thin habit. In time, it will fill out to a natural vase shape with some density; however it’s not uncommon to prune regularly to keep the plant orderly.
Fringe Flower requires well-drained acidic soil; alkaline locations such as San Antonio will require regular fertilization to avoid chlorosis which will turn leaves green to yellow. Although best placed in full sun to part shade, extreme Texas summers will drain the color from the leaves. From observation, we’ve determined the warm winters familiar to southern Texas allow Loropetalum to not only maintain the handsome color, but also bloom nicely – not many landscape plants excel in the winter like this one.
