Trachelospermum asiaticum (Jasmine, Asian)

Trachelospermum asiaticum

Asian Jasmine is a tough, evergreen groundcover widely used across Texas landscapes for its dense, low-growing habit and dependable performance. Though not a Texas native, it has proven adaptable in Central and East Texas and is commonly planted for erosion control, under large shade trees, and in areas where turf struggles. It performs best in Zones 7–10. In North Texas it may experience some winter bronzing during hard freezes but typically recovers in spring. Mature height is 12–18 inches with a spreading width of 3–6 feet or more over time, forming a thick mat that suppresses weeds. Stems that do touch dirt, eventually grow roots, making the plant’s spread endless. Space plants 18–24 inches apart for solid coverage within a growing season or two.

This plant prefers well-drained soils and adapts to both slightly acidic and mildly alkaline conditions, making it suitable for much of Central Texas. It tolerates poor soils once established but does not appreciate chronically soggy conditions. Asian Jasmine performs best in part shade to full shade, especially in our intense Texas afternoon heat. While it can tolerate morning sun, full West Texas sun can cause leaf scorch and thinning unless irrigation is consistent.

Asian Jasmine is grown primarily for its attractive, green foliage rather than flowers. While small, fragrant white blooms may occasionally appear, flowering is sparse compared to its relative, Confederate Jasmine. It is considered mildly toxic if ingested, as it contains compounds typical of the Apocynaceae family, but it is not considered severely poisonous. Deer tend to leave it alone once established, making it a reliable option in high-pressure areas. In the landscape, it works well as a mass groundcover, on slopes for erosion control, beneath live oaks, or as a low-maintenance lawn substitute in shaded areas.
