Veronica ‘Skyward Pink’ is a hardy, upright perennial that brings vertical interest to Texas landscapes with its pink flower spikes. Though not commonly used in Texas, it has shown resilience in local conditions, surviving multiple extreme winters (between 2022 and 2025) with minimal protection and care. This plant thrives in well-drained soils and performs best in full sun, though it can tolerate partial shade. It prefers neutral to slightly acidic soils and does not do well in heavy, poorly drained soils. With its long bloom period from late spring through summer, it serves as an excellent choice for pollinator gardens, attracting bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
In the landscape, ‘Skyward Pink’ is best used in perennial borders, cottage gardens, or as a vertical accent in mixed beds. Its tall, spiky flowers contrast beautifully with lower-growing perennials and ornamental grasses. Due to its moderate drought tolerance, it fits well in xeriscape designs if provided with occasional deep watering. While not commonly browsed by deer, it is not entirely deer-proof, so placement in protected areas may be beneficial in high-browse regions.
This variety typically grows 24 to 36 inches tall and spreads about 18 to 24 inches wide. When planting multiple specimens, spacing them 18 to 24 inches apart allows for proper airflow and encourages healthy growth. Cutting back spent flower spikes can prolong blooming and keep the plant looking tidy. It benefits from occasional fertilization but performs well even in low-maintenance gardens.
In winter, Veronica ‘Skyward Pink’ dies back to the ground in areas with hard freezes but reliably returns in spring. Applying a layer of mulch around the base can help insulate the roots and improve its chances of regrowth after particularly harsh winters. Trimming back dead foliage in late winter or early spring will encourage a strong flush of new growth.
