Gaura Sparkle White (Oenothera lindheimeri 'Sparkle White') is a compact selection of the Texas native gaura prized for its abundant pure white flowers and exceptionally long bloom season. Delicate blooms are held on slender stems above a tidy mound of foliage, creating a light, airy appearance that seems to dance in the breeze. Typically reaching 18 to 24 inches tall and wide, Sparkle White remains more compact and uniform than many older gaura varieties, making it an excellent choice for modern landscapes, mass plantings, and smaller garden spaces. As a cultivar of a Texas native species, it is well adapted to the heat, drought, and challenging growing conditions found throughout much of the state.
Sparkle White thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, including the alkaline clay, rocky limestone, and gravelly soils common across Central Texas. Once established, it requires little supplemental irrigation and often performs better in lean soils than in heavily amended garden beds. It tolerates sandy soils, caliche, and moderate clay, but does not perform well in areas with prolonged poor drainage or constantly wet conditions. Deer tend to browse it infrequently, making it a dependable choice for rural properties and landscapes with heavy deer pressure.
One of the greatest strengths of Sparkle White is its ability to provide continuous color and pollinator activity from spring through fall. The nectar-rich flowers attract butterflies, native bees, and other beneficial insects throughout the growing season. Its clean white blooms pair beautifully with colorful perennials, ornamental grasses, and Texas native wildflowers. It is particularly effective in pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, xeriscapes, perennial borders, and large naturalized plantings. Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart to allow them to develop into attractive mounding specimens.
In Central Texas, Sparkle White demonstrates outstanding heat tolerance and often continues blooming through the hottest parts of summer when many flowering perennials slow down. Plants may remain semi-evergreen during mild winters and typically return quickly from the crown following seasonal freezes. Hardy in USDA Zones 5a it is suitable for nearly all regions of Texas and offers years of dependable performance with minimal maintenance.
